Sports fans of a certain age remember the promise of the late 20th Century, and into the first decade of the 21st.

“Soccer is the fastest growing sport in America,” we were told for an entire generation. It was a way to pump up the country for the 1994 United States Men’s World Cup. It was a way to get us fired up for the arrival of Landon Donovan, for Freddy Adu, and for countless other American men’s near-misses.

This is all in the past, though.

Or course, we know how this story develops: The U.S. women’s soccer program becomes the toast of the world — arguably one of the most globally dominant athletic programs — and national soccer spirit officially reached fever potential.

What is very current is … well, our Current.

Paced by the incredible global talent of Temwa Chawinga, the Kansas City Current is one of the greatest ticket in all of sports. No, no. I understand how crazy that sounds; in a town with one of the greatest American football teams in the history of the sport, how can a NWSL franchise compete?

You’ve got to trust me here. In addition to the historically significant, and stunningly beautiful CPKC Stadium, as well as the Mahomes-ian ownership stake, the family atmosphere, riverfront setting, and athletic mastery is a combination unlike anything else I’ve experienced.

Lookit, I understand you might not have grown up with soccer as one of your favorite sports to watch. Trust me, though, you wanna get in on this before your annoying friends claim you’re hopping on the bandwagon. KC will be hosting some World Cup matches in 2026, and this is your chance to get the put your flag in the ground.

Oh, and if things break the way I think, you may be screaming #KCBaby all the way to the Nov. 23 league championship, which will, by the way, be hosted by CPKC Stadium.
