Christian Okoye and Barry Word were terrifying in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Patrick Mahomes. Travis Kelce. Tyreek Hill. Chris Jones.

Ask Kansas City Chiefs fans about their guys during the current dynastic run and these are names you’re gonna hear the most. It’s an incredible list — perhaps the most impressive such list in the league’s history.

But go back just a few decades to the late 1980s and 1990s and you’re likely to hear some names that bring back pretty great memories, too. Derrick Thomas, Neil Smith, Steve DeBerg, Christian Okoye. Heck, I’ll even give you credit for Deron Cherry, Nick Lowery, and Joe Montana, if you must.

One thing we do really well here in Crown Town is remember and memorialize the athletes who brought us our fondest memories from childhood.

So why is it that I never hear anyone talk about Barry Word? The 6-foot-2, 225-pound sledgehammer who played complement to Okoye (and, incidentally, lead my 1990 fantasy football backfield to victory) was only in town for three years. But those three years, Word contributed handily to teams that made it into the playoffs.

It’s not just in Chiefs Kingdom that we don’t hear Word’s name thrown around; it’s in all football circles.

Who are some of the dudes you remembered watching as a kid who you think don’t get enough credit these days?
